A revised Form 1-9, Employment Eligibility Verification has been released, and will be effective for employers starting January 22, 2017 (dated 11/14/2016 N), which can be found here. The current Form I-9 dated 03/08/2013 N may be continued to used by employers until January 22, 2017.
The new form is designed to reduce errors and enhance the completion using a computer by adding drop down lists, calendars, instructions for each field, as well as the ability to enter multiple preparers and translators.
Form I-9 was introduced as part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), which required all employers to verify that all newly hired employees present valid documentation verifying the employee's identity and legal authorization for employment in the United States. It prohibits employers from hiring those who do not have proper authorization to work in the US, as well as prohibiting employers from hiring an individual, (including US citizens) without verifying the person's identity and employment authorization through Form I-9.
